"Wow, it only happens occasionally that one encounters such useful programs! Thanks a lot for Sogudi, it really has become one of the most used utilities on my Mac." (More)

"Sogudi is one of those pieces of software that your brain gets used to. Then when you work on a computer (or another browser) that doesn't have it, you wonder how you lived so long without it." (More)

NEW - There is a new special shortcut, "default_search". You can now have Safari's search field use the search engine of your choice instead of Google.

Description

Configure your own shortcuts to search or visit your favorite sites using just a few simple keystrokes in Safari. Sogudi comes with several shortcuts included that allow you to search sites without waiting for their home pages to load, saving you time and effort.

Example: Just type 'vt' followed by your search term(s) into the Location bar and hit return. Sogudi translates your text into a fully qualified URL and the VersionTracker search comences.

Many more helpful shortcuts are included; you can modify these and easily create your own. Type 'mu' to search MacUpdate, 'dict' to search Dictionary.com, 'mov' for the Internet Movie Database, etc. If you leave off the shortcut, Sogudi will send all the words to its default shortcut instead.

You can now type search terms into the address bar just like you can in the Google Search field from Apple. The difference is that Sogudi allows you to change the search engine you use. See the Default Shortcut topic below.

New in version 0.4.5

  • Faster.
    • More tightly integrated with Safari
    • Can keep up with speedy typists.
  • Smarter
    • A space in front invokes the "default" shortcut (back by popular demand).
    • If the shortcut begins with "javascript:" then joins terms with %20 instead of "+"
    • Passes parsing of "javascript:" urls to Safari.
  • Stronger
    • New special shortcut, "default_search". Takes over the Google search field.
    • Better version checker, uses a separate thread.
    • Different bundle loading format, will not load into non-Safari applications.
  • Better
    • Shows "Sogudi" in search field when active.
    • Repaired encoding on some translation files.
    • Added Dutch & Swedish localizations.

Instructions

  • Installing http://www.atamadison.com/w/images/SogudiMenu.jpg?width=278&height=130
    1. Mount the Sogudi disk image by double clicking on it.
    2. Double click on the Sogudi Installer icon and follow the instructions.
    3. Launch Safari.
    4. Check for the "Sogudi..." menu item in the main "Safari" menu, it should appear just under "Preferences...".

  • Upgrading
    • Follow the installation instructions above.
    • The installer will detect any prior Sogudi installation and remove it before installing the new version.
    • Your shortcut file and other settings will remain untouched and safe.

  • Operating
    1. Type a shortcut where you would normally type a web address.
    2. Follow the shortcut with a space (to turn off Safari's url selection list).
    3. Type any words you wish to be substituted into the final string separated by spaces.
    4. Press ENTER or RETURN to activate.

For example:
You type:hint terminal color
Sogudi does the following:
1. Loads:http//www.macosxhints.com/search.php
?query=@@@&type=stories
&mode=search&keyType=all
2. Substitutes:"terminal" & "color" for the @@@
3. Sends to Browser:http//www.macosxhints.com/search.php
?query=terminal+color&type=stories
&mode=search&keyType=all

  • Default Shortcut
    • If the first word typed into the location field is not a known shortcut, Sogudi will look for a shortcut named "default" and pass all the words to it.
    • To automatically invoke the default shortcut, start with a space as the first character in the location field (for example "<space>red ribbon bandit" would be the same as "default red ribbon bandit").
    • NEW! If a shortcut named "default_search" exists, then terms entered into Safari's search field will be routed through the shortcut instead of going into a Google search.

  • Customizing
    1. Choose "Sogudi..." from the main "Safari" menu (command-shift-comma).
    2. You may then Add, Edit, or Remove shortcuts. You can also disable or enable Sogudi.

  • Uninstalling
    1. Remove the "Sogudi" folder from "~/Library/InputManagers".
    2. Remove, if it exists, the "SogudiShortcuts.plist" file from "~/Library/Application Support/"

Questions / Help / Hints

Notes

  • I'm no longer calling this beta software. It has been out in the world for over a year with no harmful effects reported. However, there is still no warranty and no guarantee. The user assumes all risks in using this software.

  • I first came across shortcuts while looking at OmniWeb and decided that Apple's Safari needed them, too.

  • This software is Freeware.
    It costs nothing.
    Enjoy.
